‘How can Learner voice help those with Dyslexia and Dyspraxia?’

BACKGROUND:

  • Interested in both learner voice and Dyslexia, my project aims to provide students with Dyslexia the opportunity to share their opinions and experiences through focus groups to enable them to have a voice within the college.
  • I hope that students can share their strategies through the focus group and that this will help to improve their study skills and give them strategies that might help them to succeed.
  • I hope to feedback this information from the students to their teachers to raise their teachers’ awareness of the kind of help that students with Dyslexia and Dyspraxia may need within the college.

KEY ACTIONS:

  • Phase 1: I conducted a focus group of students with Dyslexia and Dyspraxia where they discussed their current strategies for learning as well as aspects that they would find helpful from their teacher which was filmed. I also asked them to complete a questionnaire outlining their strategies and aspects that they have already tried.
  • Phase 2: From the information gathered from the focus group and questionnaires I created individualised learning plans for the students.
  • Phase 3: The plans were sent to the students and their teachers outlining ideas for consideration to help students learning.
  • Phase 4: I have been in contact with students and teachers to try and help them implement the ideas and have had another focus group. I have taken feedback from students and adjusted their IEPs accordingly and been in further contact with their teachers.
